During  the War,  a  letter  was  received  from  one  of  Private  Johnston’s  mates  in  the  16th  Battalion,  stating  that  he  was  to  be  mentioned  in  Despatches  for  Bravery,  however  the  recommending  officer  was  killed  prior  to  formalizing  the  despatch.
